So I just got back from one of the most amazing vacations I've ever been on… Just me, my Mother-in-law, my sister-in-law Wendy, and occasionally my sister-in-law Whitney when she could join us. (And NO kids. Bliss)
They flew into Richmond, and made the 6 hour trek with me to SC. Here we are collapsed on the master bed, relieved that I didn't kill anyone with my crazy driving skills.
That first night we went to see the sun set on the ocean. Here's Wendy's first glimpse of the Atlantic.
We ate ridiculously delicious food every. single. meal.
Fried green tomatoes with Pimento cheese appetizer and scallops with mushrooms sautéed in yummy slime. My favorite dish of the weekend.
Clam pasta
Crab encrusted halibut. (try not to hate us…)
Burger with Pimento cheese(seriously, try hard)
Wendy's crab cake sandwich
Our view at lunch.
Also at this restaurant, we had the best key lime pie and pecan pie we've ever had. Ever. My salivary glands are gushing just thinking about it.
We even went to Bubba Gumps for yummy sea food. They entertained us with Forrest Gump trivia.
This is the real reason we went to Charleston. Whitney was performing in a show and we wanted to see her in all her dancing glory! She is so amazingly talented! And graceful. She outshone everyone in the show.
She was often busy with the show, but we snagged every moment we could with her.
This is the bridge I had to drive over at least 2 times a day. (Sometimes 4 times when I took the wrong turn…) It's a gorgeous bridge. It was just recently built but projected to last only 100 years. I guess they don't have a lot of confidence in their bridge building skills???
We took a LOT of selfies...
We took the ferry to Fort Sumter.
Fort Sumter. I knew nothing about this place until I went. The first shots of the Civil War happened here. There were no fatalities that day, which is amazing. It was incredible seeing cannon balls and artillery imbedded in the walls of the fort.
We went on a carriage ride through downtown Charleston. Here is our ride, Blooper. (Or was it Trooper? Hooper???) Our tour guide, Matthew McConaughey younger-brother-look-alike, did an excellent job teaching us Charleston History.
Mooooore Selfies!
Well done Flooper! You only made Wendy gag a couple of times with your equestrian perfumes...
This was hand's down, my favorite part of the trip. This church held it's first service in 1761. Many famous people have worshipped here, including George Washington and Robert E. Lee.
Everything in this church was the original. Nothing had been replaced. Repaired, yes, but not replaced. The same windows, the same pews, the same seat cushions.
The same altar and tapestries.
See that stained glass window? An original Tiffany. And somehow it survived 2 wars, major fires, and earthquakes. The other churches in the neighborhood weren't so lucky.
This is the original flooring, and that mark on the floor is where a cannon ball hit after crashing through the ceiling. It landed in between the altar and stained glass window, missing each by just a couple of feet.
And in their totally awesome church-yard, they have buried 2 of the signers of the Constitution.
These blocks are all over downtown Charleston. They are the blocks they used to get into their carriages. There is so must history there. The houses and gardens are amazing.
LOVED this vacation. I am so glad I got to go and make those memories with these wonderful ladies. I'm already wondering when our next getaway is going to be!
